History

2008-09: McKinlay skated in 55 games for the Chilliwack Bruins in his first season in the WHL. He scored 3 goals with 7 assists and 47 PMs. McKinlay had a -15 plus/minus on a Bruins team that finished with the league’s third-worst record.

2009-10: McKinlay led Chilliwack defensemen with 20 goals as the Bruins were much-improved in Coach Marc Habscheid’s first season. McKinlay had 22 assists and was an even plus/minus with 57 PMs in 72 games. He skated in all six games in the Bruins’ first round series with Tri-City and was -3 with 2 goals and 3 assists. Ranked 126th in Central Scouting’s final rankings, he was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the 7th round (189th overall) of the 2010 NHL Draft.

2010-11: McKinlay suffered an early season knee injury that hampered him much of the season. In his third WHL season, he skated in 55 games for Chilliwack and scored 6 goals with 14 assists; finishing -16 with 60 PMs. McKinlay was the second-leading scorer for Chilliwack in the playoff series with Spokane, scoring 2 goals with 2 assists in five games, and finished -2 for the series.
